German Fetish Couture Meets American Aesthetic
BERLIN – German designer Tatjana Warnecke never intended to become an icon of fetish fashion. In fact, her couture is one of the darlings of mainstream fashion magazines like Glamour, Clint, Prestige and Gothic Beauty. Her designs have appeared in videos and runway shows worldwide.
Nevertheless, Warnecke’s edgy, stylized collections — often resembling something from science fiction or a graphic novel — has a legion of devoted fans among high-end fetish folks.
Some of Europe’s most well-known photographers have lensed Warnecke’s striking clothing, but the latest to work with the designer is from the most unlikely of places: Oklahoma City, smack-dab in the middle of the American Bible Belt.
Warnecke’s collaboration with photographer Dirk Hooper will showcase the designer’s Cosmic Couture Collection. The garments feature extremely close-fitting cuts that accentuate feminine and masculine forms. The clothing is created in glossy and matte vinyl mixed with a high percentage of Lycra and the occasional bit of artificial fur. Playful accessories like masks, collars, gloves and tails are included, as well.
“What makes my Cosmic Couture Collection so different is that I focus on high-quality, hard-wearing, totally useful yet absolutely fantastic garments that provide opportunities for expressing your innermost desires, limited only by your imagination,” Warnecke said.
Hooper is assembling a team, the right models and exquisite locations to bring Warnecke’s Cosmic Couture Collection to life.
“I’ve been an enthusiastic fan of Tatjana’s work for 20 years,” he said. “Her work is an amazing combination of fetish and sci-fi that is truly inspiring. The opportunity to take photos with her designs is seriously a dream come true.
“I plan on creating a large series of diverse photos over the next few months,” he continued. “I want to share the best photos with some magazines, but I also may explore a focused art show — maybe a book, or who knows what. This project presents a universe full of options.”
