When Overzealous Conservatives Attack
HURGHADA, Egypt – Hurghada police have apologized for arresting and holding 10 tourists on suspicion of producing pornography after discovering the Georgian visitors merely were filming a swimwear competition for the reality TV show Top Girl.
According to the Georgian Ambassador to Egypt, Syria and Tunisia, the popular show is the Georgian version of America’s Next Top Model. The cast and crew had permission to film on the banks of the Red Sea in Egypt’s second-largest city, an international tourist destination, Archil Dzuliashvili told Georgian media.
“The incident is over now,” he said. “Police of Hurghada officially apologized, while the crew continues working in Hurghada.”
A spokesperson for Egypt’s minister of tourism told reporters “the tourists were diving and shooting the beautiful aquatic flora and fauna. The security officer had wrongly assessed the situation due to his inexperience.”
The arrests occurred June 1, the same day the Egyptian high court delayed consideration of a case that seeks to force the Ministry of Communication to comply with a November 2012 decree blocking all internet pornography. Thus far the ministry has declined, saying attempting to block porn at the root level would cost the country as much as U.S. $16.5 million and disrupt internet service nationwide. Arguments will resume July 2.
