Toscani’s 2011 Vagina Calendar Inflames Critics
YNOT EUROPE – Probably the models who took part will not become famous for their images, but their vaginas will be forever remembered in history, thanks to Oliviero Toscani. The photographer started 2011 with the release of the fruits of his labors to surmount an immense challenge: a calendar of the vagina.
This is a commissioned work for the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale [an organization that promotes vegetable-tanned luxury Italian leather]. What better demonstration of natural skin than female genitals? Twelve months; twelve different vaginas. Twelve simple close-ups in natural, living color.
Controversy surrounds the calendar, as might be expected, but that has not dampened Toscani‘s enthusiasm about his project. It is not the first time the photographer has faced criticism, nor probably will it be the last.
“I do my job and try to do the right picture,” said Toscani. “I want to discuss speculation about the world of women, which is the subject of many calendars and TV shows. Women often have to make a spectacle to be seen.”
The calendar represents “a provocation against everything that debases women,” he added. “As absurd as it is, I agree with those who talk against me for offending women’s dignity. But I am used to such reactions.”
