London Teacher and Porn Star Reprimanded, But Cleared to Resume Work
YNOT EU – An educator in London has been cleared to resume work as a teacher after receiving an official reprimand from the General Teaching Council. Benedict Garrett, aka “Johnny Anglais,” was moonlighting as an adult film star and a male stripper while working as an educator in a secondary school in the UK. Garrett last worked at Beal High School in East London.
An investigation began after students came across a film trailer featuring Garrett. The actor also maintains a website at www.johnnyanglais.com where he advertises his involvement in the adult industry.
Derek Johns, chair of the disciplinary board, noted that Garrett understands the majority viewpoint regarding his involvement in both porn and teaching, even if he doesn’t agree with it.
“You have stated that you will continue to advocate the morality and acceptability of your involvement in the adult industry and argue that it should not be inappropriate for a teacher to work as a stripper or in pornographic films,” said Johns. “‘However, the committee is content that you recognise the widely held public view that such work is not acceptable conduct for a teacher.”
Garrett, who argues that students should be taught sex-positive attitudes, has described his goal “to unashamedly demonstrate the art of pleasure in the realms of fitness, sex and entertainment.”
Johns however said that he was satisfied that Garrett would no longer operate as both an adult film star and a teacher at the same time.
“In relation to risk of repetition, the committee considers it is unlikely that you will seek to return to the teaching profession whilst working as a stripper or in pornographic films,” said Johns.
Previously, Garrett has said that he would probably return to teaching once his ban had been lifted.
“I have done nothing illegal. I don’t see why my private life has anything to do with me teaching,” said Garrett. “Some teachers drink too much, some smoke – that makes them bad role models as far as I’m concerned.”
The reprimand will remain on Garrett’s record for two years.
