Despite Ban, Porn Sites Rank Among Most Popular with Egyptians

YNOT EUROPE – The Arab world continues to enact laws aimed at curtailing porn consumption, but recent search data suggests the efforts may meet with significant pushback by citizens. In Egypt, for example, at least five of the top 100 most-visited websites are adult video sites. The statistic reportedly surprised more than a few of the public administrators who ordered a ban on pornography just last week.

Alexa, the Amazon.com subsidiary that provides global rankings of website popularity by country, shows Facebook, Google and YouTube are the top three sites visited by people with Egyptian IP addresses, but sites like XNXX Galleries remain more popular in Egypt than Twitter or Wikipedia.

In the U.S. — where surfing adult websites remains legal for the moment — the top 25 spots are taken by the usual G-rated suspects including Pinterest, Amazon and eBay. The most popular adult site, Pornhub, ranks 42nd.
